Alongside the development of this website, I have also been focusing on improving my ongoing personal project which could be viewed as a continuation of my previous series “Beautifully Mundane”. Whilst I am still aiming to highlight the idea that the city is a palimpsest through my photography, with this development I plan to greatly expand on these aforementioned themes primarily through visual strategies.
I introduced myself to this new project through two shoots, which took place over several days and in two different locations. I thought this was the best approach to this body of work as it was my first shoot of the year, therefore I had to get myself motivated and back into the flow of consistently making photographs. I began by returning to Leeds with the intent of purely exploring my surroundings and once again bringing forth these indicators of change and development. The way in which I was shooting felt similar to how it was conducted during the experimentation of “Beautifully Mundane”, although more refined as I now knew what I wanted to capture. I aimed to replicate this way of shooting in an unfamiliar location, so for my second shoot I travelled to Sheffield.
As I walked through Sheffield I felt the presence of change to be a lot more prominent than that of Leeds, perhaps even slightly overbearing. No matter which direction I looked it did not take long to identify construction sites and as I looked towards the sky my view was often plagued by several cranes, although this became noticeably less apparent as I wandered further out from the city centre. The change in atmosphere was almost instant and I attempted to capture this within my photographs.
I notice that the difference between the two series is notable in the sense that the photographs taken in Leeds feel a lot more certain with what they want to present. I do not gather the same sense of familiarity and direction with the Sheffield series, therefore I plan to revisit and further explore this place as I believe it has a lot of potential.
