During my portfolio review with Jack Greenwood and Emily Ryalls I was given feedback on my current project "Forgotten Places", which documents my unconventional observations of overlooked places within the city. I summarised this project with a single A1 landscape print and an A5 Dummy Book. The comparison in scale between the print and the book was commented on by both Jack and Emily who suggested the sizes compliment one another. Within the book the typeface, text size and text placement stood out to Jack as a major weakness. I was suggested to strongly consider the importance of text, most notably this large body of writing I had placed within the middle of the sequence. As incorporating text into a photobook is fairly difficult, I may feature this as an external page to accompany the book to avoid disrupting the sequence.
Both Jack and Emily complimented the photographs I selected for this photobook suggesting they succeed as a coherent series, whilst showcasing a variety of environments from differentiating perspectives. The sequence of the photobook was described as strong, although there were improvements to be made with a few spreads. One spread in particular which featured 3 images across a double page spread felt out of place within the sequence, this seemed to disrupt the natural flow of the photobook and overwhelm the reader. I was suggested to feature more single image spreads before and after these heavily populated pages as this use of empty space can function as a break for the reader and avoid the sequence from feeling too busy.
The feedback I received from both practitioners during this portfolio review was very beneficial. As I am currently at an early stage in the development of my exhibition prints, this review provided me with a defined sense of direction. I plan to build on my work through the incorporation of these suggestions, whilst continuing my experimentations with sequencing, paper types and overall presentation.
