Print Workshop with Pressision and Loose Joints

Updated: Apr 13, 2022

Today's two part workshop with Pressision’s Ian Cavanagh and Loose Joints’ Lewis Chaplin focused on the technicalities of printing. The first half, hosted by Ian, consisted of a brief introduction to Pressision Print and the kind of service they offer. Following this he elaborated on some factors and tips that should be considered when deciding to print. These included the importance of a clear file name and description with appropriate file sizing, as well as delivery date, quantity, flat size and finish size. Additional considerations mentioned were the page count, paper stock and weight, colour, finish, inks, material and shipping as these all contribute to the final cost of the product.

Ian concluded his talk with a few final suggestions, which highlighted the significance of gathering multiple quotes, most often three, before deciding to print; as well as receiving written proof of these quotes. As prices vary between providers it is important to review at least more than one to see which is the most cost effective. This discussion around printing considerations was followed up with a brief workshop where we were given the opportunity to look through physical copies of some books printed by Pressision. It was interesting to physically engage with the various books and observe the vastly different paper types and printing methods. One that stood out to me the most was titled “Mirri” which featured several pages printed with metallic ink.

The second half of this workshop was handed over to Lewis Chaplin, co-owner of Loose Joints based in Marseille, France. Lewis introduced himself to us and then elaborated on his role within Loose Joints, which consists of editing, sequencing, production and management of the design and narrative of the publication. Lewis established himself within the print/publishing world through the production of his first successfully published book in 2010 titled “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” which was issued by Self Publish, Be Happy. This publication featured a selection of photographs coupled with words and objects.

Following this, Lewis sought out an active and engaging community for emerging photographers, therefore alongside Alex Webb the two created “Fourteen Nineteen”. Their first co-published book, “Minus Five”, showcased a collection of images from several photographers. As well as this, Daniel Shea’s hardcover classical monograph “Blisner, IL” was originally published by both Alex and Lewis, which I found interesting as Shea’s work heavily inspires my own practice. Currently, Lewis works collaboratively with his wife Sarah Piegay Espenon at Loose Joints and have contributed to publications including Harley Wier’s “Paintings” and “Homes”, as well as Jack Davison’s “Photographs” as well as the annotated edition. Additional prints and publications can be observed at https://loosejoints.biz/ which acts as both a store and compendium of every Loose Joints publication.
